McCarthy: They Go Into History Books
Posted: 24 October 2021

South African DSTV Premiership side AmaZulu FC rewrote the history books after qualifying for their first-ever CAF Champions League group stages when they drew one-all against hot-shot favourites TP Mazembe in Lumumbashe yesterday.

Benni McCarthy’s lads scored an important goal that ensured that they go through to the next stage, dumping out giants Mazembe, and McCarthy was understandably proud of his team, saying;

“I know sometimes I’m a tough Coach, I’m a tough father, but it’s only because I want the best for my players, I want the best for my kids. We can’t have the quality, and we want to be mediocre sometimes, so when I’m critical with my team, it’s because I know what they have.

“Today (yesterday), they showed me what I see everyday; I saw hard work, I saw heart, I saw character, I saw personality, I saw arrogance and I saw a football team that’s not scared of anything – mentality, especially after what we’ve been through.

“We’ve never played on a astroturf and it was a new thing for us to do, you know, and to have put in a performance like we did – wow. These guys are the real heroes of AmaZulu and they go in the history books of the club after what they did on the football pitch,” concluded McCarthy

The Durban-based side are expected to return to a heroes welcome when they touch down at the OR Tambo International Airport later today.
