Mnqithi: It’s Disappointing

Former CAF Champions League winners Mamelodi Sundowns FC displayed their class, swag, style and authority over Maniema Union in the second leg of Africa’s premium club competition yesterday after confirming their group stage spot with a 2-0 win and 4-2 on aggregate.

The Brazilians uncharacteristically scored two goals from set-pieces, and the club’s Co-Head Coach Manqoba Mnqithi tells The Beautiful Game that although set-pieces are part and parcel of the game, he was disappointed that they didn’t score from open play, saying;

“Yeah no, it’s a little bit disappointing to score only from set-pieces, from such a very good performance because in terms of play, I think we dominated the game; accuracy in our passes, game precision, triangles, very good build-up moments, build-up schemes, but unfortunately they never yielded a goal.

“We must also give credit to the boys, to score from set-pieces, it’s one area of the game that is very important for a big team like Sundowns, considering that most teams park the bus. So we will always unlock a defence from scoring from a set-piece and the game becomes open.

“One is excited that we scored from a set-piece but a little bit disappointed that from such a dominant performance, we could not score from a build-up when we had so many build-ups, so many counter presses but maybe credit should also go to them because they had some really good moments to score,” he concluded.

Bafana Ba Style have now switched their attentions to the MTN 8 Final, where they face Cape Town City FC this weekend, with no margin for error for both sets of players.
