McCarthy: Players Should Think

McCarthy: Players Should Think
Posted: 21 August 2021

The opening DStv Premiership match was a humdinger of a fixture as it pitted last season’s Champions Mamelodi Sundowns FC and runners up AmaZulu FC respectively.

Sundowns edged the encounter 1-0, courtesy of Themba Mshishi Zwane converting from the penalty spot. The Beautiful Game asked Usuthu’s Head Coach Benni McCarthy of his thoughts on the pitch, and he gave a scathing but honest observation, saying;

“Yeah listen, I think the pitch looked fantastic, wonderful to play on and I think we could’ve made a better game of it. I think it’s just unfortunate that it’s a rugby ground, it is a rugby ground and some rugby teams like the ground softer.

“I mean it is well known that football pitches are much more firmer than rugby pitches. So… underneath it was a bit soft, and that’s why you saw that so many players were sipping and slipping in key moments.

“Our players have to be a bit intelligent, when you watch European football; English, Belgian, Spanish, and German football – when it rains, players play with six studs! That is just the norm, that’s just the basics of football, and both teens had the same problem, you know,” concluded McCarthy.

The Durban-based have lost two back-to-back games for the first time under McCarthy’s tutelage, one on the MTN 8 last weekend and last night. Usuthu will next welcome Moroka Swallows in Durban on Wednesday evening.
