‘Chincha Guluva’ – It’s An Historical Day

The seventh (7th) of January will always be an historical and momentous day for all those connected and affiliated with Kaizer Chiefs FC – it is a day when the football club was formed, some fifty two (52) years ago – on the seventh of January 1970.

The Phefeni Glamour Boys, as their affectionately known in football circles, are one of the most successful clubs in the history of South African football, and the club’s founder and President, Kaizer ‘Chincha Guluva’ Motaung, reflects on the birth of the club, saying;

“Well I must say this is a day that will be long-remembered after we have left because it is a great day indeed. (It is) a day where this baby was born (Kaizer Chiefs FC) to bring excitement to the entire community of football, and to me, it is one of the greatest days ever in my sporting life.

“When we started Kaizer Chiefs, there was a need for a change as well as far as soccer was concerned, and it obviously came at a time where we obviously had a few hiccups, the reasons are history now and everyone knows (referring to Apartheid).

“We will always remember this day, how significant this day was, because when we started, we also had a lot of sceptics – people who thought we were not serious, that we are just taking a chance. However, especially me, I had a burning desire to be part of a great thing (forming Kaizer Chiefs),” he concluded.

The club have endured one of their longest trophy-starving years in recent times, and Kaizer is desperate to see his charges return to the pinnacle of South African football this campaign and beyond.
