Former African Champions League winners Mamelodi Sundowns FC were held to a surprising goalless draw against Al Merrikh CF yesterday in Egypt.

The Brazilians now have four points from two games in Africa’s premium club competition. Rhulani Mokwena, the club’s Co-Head Coach, reflects on the draw, saying;

“I suppose a game of two halves; I think in the first half we played exceptionally well, extremely dominant and created a lot of chances. We had six (6) big, big chances.

“They created two chances from our carelessness on the ball, and they caught us on the counter-attack – the one Brian Onyango cleared off the line, that was a big chance (for them).

“But to be honest, we were very stable, (we) had too much control, we didn’t feel like we were in trouble for most parts of the second half. I think tactically as well, we were very, very good and they changed the system a lot, made a couple of changes with the personnel also, but we were always in control,” concluded Mokwena.

Sundowns will be facing defending champions and nemesis Al Ahly SC on Saturday evening at the intimidating Cairo International Stadium.
