McCarthy: I Wasn’t Backed In The Market!

Durban-based side AmaZulu FC have bagged two points from a possible six in their last two fixtures with score-draws against Stellenbosch FC and Kaizer Chiefs respectively, which has irked Usuthu’s Head Coach Benni McCarthy.

The outspoken mentor has told The Beautiful Game’s Siyanda Mdluli that he was not backed in the August/September transfer window after their 1-all draw with The Phefeni Glamour Boys last night in Johannesburg, saying;

“I think obviously any team, when you’re successful, you can’t just rest on your laurels , on what you’ve done.

“Now you’ve got to keep everyone on their toes, you’ve got to add quality players that will come in and show these players ‘Okay, you guys have raised the bar, now we’re coming in and we’re trying to push the team to greater heights’ and that has been missing.

“Unfortunately I wasn’t backed in the market with the players I wanted to bring in, to give the team that edge. I definitely think we need players, a few quality players to come in, otherwise we’ll just be that team that had that an unbelievable season, finished 2nd, qualified for CAF Champions League but we’ve reached our level and can’t push anymore than what we are doing now. I can’t make milk from water my friend,” concluded the irritated McCarthy.

Usuthu will now travel back to KZN and prepare for yet another difficult fixture, this time against rivals Maritzburg United in the local derby on Sunday.
