Middendorp Spills Frustrations

DSTV Premiership side Maritzburg United were agonisingly beaten 1-0 by Mamelodi Sundowns FC in the capital last night.

The Team of Choice looked to have Sundowns’ number after keeping a clean sheet in the first half, however, Peter Shalulile’s volleyed goal separated the two teams.

The Beautiful Game asked Head Coach Ernst Middendorp of his frustration in the encounter, and he said to us;

“Ja…as I said, everybody knows the structure (of Sundowns), it’s not a secret. The structure of Sundowns is counter-pressing, they work with players on top of the defence line, sometimes they play diagonal passes, and we prepared ourselves for it.

“The majority of goals that Sundowns is scoring is the in the first ten or fifteen (10/15) minutes of the second half – we prepared ourselves for it. We knew their threats, we knew exactly that the diagonal balls are coming and that their a successful combination team.

“As I said, we were prepared for it, we put it (structure to stop Sundowns) repeatedly and in half time again, changed a bit our structure and not to be open on the flanks on the left and right. It is frustrating because I know we can produce more combinations moving forward, creating opportunities and moving into the final third – but that was not enough in what we have seen today,” he concluded.

The Team of Choice will be looking to return to winning ways when they travel to Eastern Cape to face a disjointed Chippa United on Sunday.
