Broos World Cup Might Be Too Soon
Posted: 19 August 2021
South African top football journalists descended at SAFA House this lunchtime for the announcement of the Bafana Bafana squad that will do duty against Zimbabwe and Ghana on the third and sixth of next month respectively.
In a new-look Bafana squad, Head Coach Hugo Broos cast doubt on the national team qualifying for the 2022 World Cup, citing it’s too soon but guaranteed an AFCON 2023 qualification, saying;
“We have huge work that we have to do. We have to rebuilt the team, a young team, a victorious team and we have to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar next year. But already, we are in a very tough group.
“Already, we didn’t qualify for AFCON next year, and it could happen that we don’t qualify for the World Cup but you can be sure that we will try with the team to qualify. And also, my players will work hard, who doesn’t want to go to the World Cup?
” It is really a highlight of a football career, I was once at the World Cup. I know for a football player, and also for the country, for South Africa, and also for the technical side, it is the highlight.
“So, we will try to be in Qatar next year, but if we don’t…if we don’t, those games will be a fantastic experience for the players and we’ll be ready to qualify for AFCON 2023,” he concluded.
The 31-man squad will undergo a series of COVID-19 tests prior and after their games to ensure all players are clear of the virus. The team is expected to report for camp on Sunday, the 29th of August, just after 18:H00pm.
