Baxter Optimistic Against Rivals
Posted: 13 August 2021
The 2021 African Champions League finalists Kaizer Chiefs will travel to the capital on Sunday to face hot-shot favourites Mamelodi Sundowns FC in the quarterfinal of the MTN 8.
However, returning Chiefs Head Coach Stuart William Baxter says he already has an “excuse” if they get beat by Sundowns, albeit confident as well.
The Englishman faced The Brazilians in the MTN 8 in his first game when he managed Chiefs some six years ago, where they got beat, but went on to lift the PSL league title, saying;
“Yeah, it is a bit of a deja vu, maybe I’ve got my excuse already, because I can then say we’ve gone on and won the league. But obviously we don’t want to give excuses.
“It is a big game, Sundowns v. Chiefs is always a big game, Sundowns is a team that has set a benchmark over the last couple of seasons and I think it’s up to everybody else, the chasing pack to try to…in Sir Alex Ferguson’s words ‘knock them off there perch’.
“I would like to think we are one of the chasing pack, and I’d like to think that we can have a little bit of a say as to where the trophy goes at the end of the season. It is early days for us, it is still early days in terms of the development of the squad; players coming back from injury, integrating new players into the team, it is early days but I’m quite optimistic and I think the players have done an unbelievable job,” he concluded.
The Phefeni Glamour Boys have a much bigger squad this season after making telling and convincing signings in the off-season, and victory is in sight for the Black and Gold of Chiefs against Sundowns this weekend.
