Why Chiefs Released Hunt
Posted: 29 May 2021
Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs FC yesterday parted ways with their Head Coach Gavin Hunt after just nine months into his three-year deal.
The former Bidvest Wits, SuperSport United mentor leaves the club having reached the semifinals of the CAF Champions League and eleventh on the DSTV Premiership standings, seemingly safe from the relegation drop off or promotional playoffs.
The Beautiful Game spoke to two sources close to both the coach, and have confirmed one or more reasons for his departure, saying;
“It’s very shocking for Kaizer Chiefs to release a Coach before the end of the season and with only two games left, and doing it to one of the most successful coaches in the history of South African football.
“When I spoke to Hunty (referring to Gavin Hunt), there were a lot decisions that had to be made. Firstly, remember the club ban is coming to an end, so Hunt wanted his own players and they couldn’t agree on that with the club.
“Secondly, Hunt is used to making a lot of decisions at a club, like at Wits, SuperSport and at Swallows FC where he used to Coach, but things are a bit different here. I think that didn’t sit well with him. But he is going to be unveiled somewhere else before the start of preseason, watch the space,” concluded our source.
The Phefeni Glamour Boys have already been linked with former Head Coach Stuart William Baxter to return to the club. The next Coach will have a major rebuilding job at Naturena with close to fifteen (15) players set to be released, loaned out or contracts terminated.
