Mnqithi: We Gave It Our Best Shot

Reigning Premier League Champions Mamelodi Sundowns FC bowed out of the CAF Champions League yesterday afternoon after drawing one-all against Egyptian giants Al Ahly SC in the second leg of the competition, losing 3-1 on aggregate.
The club’s Co-Head Coach, Manqoba Mnqithi reflects on the performance on the day, and said;
“We knew it was not going to be easy, but I think we did it a little more difficult by conceding so early in the game. We tried very hard to push; they were sitting on a very low block, unfortunately when you concede from a corner kick, which I think we didn’t do very well in the zones.
“They created problems for us, we did anticipate that if they score, we might be expected to dig a little bit deeper and we tried, I cannot fault the players. I think they gave it their best shot but on the day, with everything that we tried, we could not get the desired outcome but this is what a Champions League match will always be.
“You can do so much, but at times it can be so difficult to penetrate a very low block. I think we did try to have so great moments behind their defence but it was unfortunate that we didn’t score from the Peter opportunity. But we…we gave it out best shot,” concluded Mnqithi.
Sundowns will now be desperate to wrap up the league title on Wednesday when they face cross-town rivals SuperSport United in the capital.
