Mamelodi Sundowns FC might have lost their first league game of the season against bitter rivals Kaizer Chiefs, but The Brazilians will be buoyed by the performance of striker Gift Motupa.

Motupa, an off-season signing from the now-defunct Bidvest Wits, made his third appearance for the club. The Beautiful Game asked Sundowns’ Head Coach Manqoba Mnqithi of Motupa’s performance, and he said;

“Yeah I believe (Gift) Motupa had a very good game, he contributed immensely in our attack, even the goal that we scored, he was very composed to create that moment.

“Personally, I think it’s a very good start for him, and opens up bigger opportunities for him to get a start because he had a very good run for somebody who has not had a run.

“Unfortunately, he had those cramps that forced us to make a decision to say ‘Let’s not prolong this thing, maybe he might end up getting injured and we don’t want to have him injured at this point’

“But honestly speaking, he had a very good game by our standards based on what we wanted to see from him. He defended from the top and stole some balls from Mathoho and he created very good moments for us and that was very good for him,” concluded Mnqithi.

Motupa will have his work cut out as he will be fighting for a starting berth with Namibian hit-man Peter Shalulile.
