Barker On Cape Derby… In Gauteng!

Barker On Cape Derby… In Gauteng!

A football derby is always special in more ways than one; it’s a battle between two clubs from the same town or city fighting for supremacy, in this case, from the same province.

Stellenbosch FC will do battle against a provincial foe, Cape Town City FC, in the capital of South Africa, Pretoria later tonight. The CoronaVirus has brought forth it’s own surprises, but never would one think of a Derby played in a “foreign” province.

Stellies Head Coach Steve Barker spoke to The Beautiful Game on this one, saying;

“Yes it is a unique situation, and it doesn’t sound right when you say a Cape Derby in Gauteng, but yeah it is what it is.

“There has been a rivalry between ourselves and Cape Town City in a short period of time; in training matches, during the season and when Benni McCarthy was the coach, it was quite heated at the beginning of this season.

“You know their players who know each other, like Robyn Johannes who played for Cape Town City and now playing for us, they grew up playing against each other in Cape Town.

When asked about the mood of his players ahead of this pulsating encounter, he said;

“The players’ mood is really positive, its really upbeat, they don’t want to lose so we going to go for it and I anticipate that there is going to be fireworks,” concluded the hard working Barker.

The game will take place at the TUKS Stadium this evening on the pay-as-you-go television, with kick off at 18:H00, South African Time.
